This illustrates their power and control over others. Also, Rich emerges as the leader because he is the only person able to catch fish for food. Rich's leadership is challenged when Gervase, Kelly, and Sue attempt to catch fish on their own. They don't want to be dependent on Rich. Since Rich is the main source of food, he holds power and control over the others.
Lord of the Flies and Survivor have similar yet different settings because many aspects of their situations are similar and some different. Both are located on islands. Lord of the Flies is set on a deserted island, while Survivor is set on an island in the China Sea. When a meeting is needed for all to attend, both have specified meeting places. Lord of the Flies meets at "the platform" and Survivor meets at the tribal council meetings. Both must find their own food but, in Lord of the Flies the boys hunt in the jungle with spears for pigs and in survivor Rich spears fish by the reef. Also, both settings contain a beach. In Lord of the Flies, Ralph and his group live on the beach while Jack and "the hunters" move up to the mountain. In Survivor both groups are on the beach but are separated by two miles. The setting for Lord of the Flies and the setting for Survivor are alike in many ways but also different in some ways.
Simon, from Lord of the Flies, and Dirk, from Survivor, are similar because they both have strong spiritual beliefs. Simon has his own sanctuary where he goes to pray and meditate by himself. Dirk likes to be alone to pray or read his bible during what he calls "his quiet time." Grace and composure are displayed when Dirk is voted off. He doesn't appear mad but says, "I want to thank the Lord for giving me this opportunity and experience I've gotten even though I didn't win." Simon displays passion when he helps Piggy to find his glasses. Because of their strong spiritual beliefs, both Dirk and Simon designated a place to be alone and time to pray because Simon believed God would get him and the others off the island, while Dirk believed God had kept him on the island.
