The Portrayal of Sports stars and National Identity. Represe

Famous German publications such as "Bild" and "Neu Presse" had headlines of the following nature,.
"Goodbye England" a relatively mild alternative to that of the English tabloid press(Blain et al 1993 p59).
The two examples above show quotes that are from the tabloids using jingoistic headlines when reporting on national sports results, this trend however does not occur only in the tabloids, the broadsheets are just a guilty. A article written in The Guardian on June 26th following a German defeat of The Netherlands, had the following headline,.
"World Cup brings out German storm troopers again" (Blain et al 1993 p68). .
The corresponding article goes on to talk about the how during the World Cup the Nazi salute and slogans were re-emerging in the stands of the stadiums. Although when looking at the article and in a sense decoding the meanings of the headline and content of the story, it would appear that even the broadsheets, who are renowned for there more reserved stories and headlines, still portray to the readers a prominent sense of national identity. In a sense they are reminding the nation of past events between the countries concerned.
The jingoistic tendencies of the British press do not only concentrate on the Germans as the main target for these nationalistic headlines. Another example occurs when examining the relationship between the press and the Argentineans. The obvious reason for the England Argentina conflict is the Falklands War, and the fact that the two countries were in direct conflict with each other. This war of words so to speak spilled over when England were eliminated from the World Cup of 1986 in Mexico, when the infamous "hand of god" of Diego Maradona played it's part in ending England's World Cup dream. The press at the time dubbed the Argentines "Argies" as they had during the Falklands War crisis. Again referring back to war times, and using military links.
