             The "War on Drugs" is truly a comical idea to many. The government will never be able to have total control over people in other nations and within the United States producing drugs. The "War on Drugs" should partly be a war against the people using drugs. With the treatment of current abusers and education of our generation and future generations, demand for drugs will be cut significantly. Economic principles state that without demand production will dwindle. This is the way to reduce drug trafficking and production. We also know that when supply is cut over time demand will fall. If the number of drugs crossing the border falls drastically, demand will first stay the same and the price of drugs will rise, but after time the prevalence of drugs in our society will slowly fall.
             The drug trafficking by Mexican transporters has led to an increase in violence, drug abuse, corruption and drug cartels in Mexico, particularly in towns near the U.S. border ("Federal"). The trafficking of drugs is detrimental to society as a whole due to the nature of what drugs do to the body physically and mentally, and the fact that the drugs trafficked are illegal substances("Cost"). Drugs abuse leads to a life style that is unhealthy and unproductive socially. Every year the United States loses huge amounts of money due to lose of productivity that comes from individual that use drugs. The National Institute of Health estimates that the cost of people abusing drugs and alcohol was 245.7 billion dollars in 1992("Cost"). Government programs to help people quit using and abusing drugs costs tax payers also("Cost"). This is a huge sum of money, but even worse is the emotional cost using drugs has on families and the one's who are closely linked to people who use drugs.
             The seeming harmless act of moving plant leaves and white powder across a border leads to more harmful behavior. Over the years drug trafficking due to its" lucrative nature has lead to the development of the organized drug business or drug cartels.
