Hong Kong's Mass communication


( ) "RTHK is a publicly-funded, broadcaster whose mission is to inform, educate and entertain the public through a strategic balance of programs." ( ).
             MTV has chosen to use a subscription television broadcasting cable such as Hong Kong Cable Television Limited (HKCTV). HKCTV broadcasts to over 30 channels, using a "fibre-optic network and Microwave Multipoint Distribution System (MMDS) network." ( ) Under this service, HKCTV is able to broadcast several locally produced channels and many other channels that are devoted to music, sports, film, finance and childrens programs. It also carries several overseas channels. Many regional and international broadcasters have otherwise chosen Hong Kong as their Asian broadcasting headqurarters as they have been attracted by the amazing infrastructure and world-class telecommunication facilities, as well as the other things that make Hong Kong the best place to do business in Asia. Hong Kong is the home base for MTV's competitor Satellite Television Asian Region Limited (STAR TV). STAR transmits to more than 30 channels in seven languages and has an audience reach of approximately 300 million people across Asia. ( ) By the end of the year, about 960 000 homes were passed by HKCTV's optical fibre network and about 730 000 homes were served by its MMDS network. The number of household subscribers was over 450 000. ( ).
             Hong Kong's press also remains a vital and essential part to the growth of its communications industry. Most of MTV's advertisements and marketing schemes, (other than broadcasts) rely heavily on the distribution of the press. The Hong Kong press includes 24 Chinese-language dailies, nine English-language dailies, one bilingual daily and five in other languages. Of the Chinese-language dailies, 17 cover mainly local and overseas general news, three specialize in finance and the rest cover entertainment news, such as television and cinema news.
