A Women's Strength in a Broken

" [Page 6].
This passage shows the reliance families had on the fathers at start of the Dust Bowl. The Dust Bowl had left the family with no land to farm; they were forced to leave the only home they have ever known. Wives and children looked to their fathers in order to determine how they should act, or feel in this situation. Pa Joad was the Joad family's security - their sense of safety. However, this role slowly changed. Pa became unsure of himself, and felt wary of his actions. He never had to deal with this kind of situation where every thing he has learned has disappeared in front of his eyes. .
"[Pa] twisted his neck to look up at [Ma], and he was ashamed. Her tone had made him ashamed."[Page 139].
Ma began to slowly support what Pa was too unsure to hold - the family. The family soon turned to Ma for comfort and how to act in the difficult times. Ma's role as a power figure gave the Joad family hope staring through the intimidating glare of the Great Depression.
"Ma went into the house again. There was a screech of a lantern hood and the yellow light flashed up in the dark kitchen. When she lifted the lid of the big pot, the smell of boiling side-meat and beet greens came out the door. They waited for her to come back across the darkening yard, for Ma was powerful in the group."[Page 140].
Rose of Sharon is the only daughter in the Joad family. She is the first to marry and the first to have a prospect of a new addition to the Joad family. Although her self-journey doesn't start at the beginning of the book she represents the family's new hope. The baby she is carrying is responsible for many decisions and shifts in the family's hierarchal structure. Only after Grandpa and Grandma Joad dies does Rose of Sharon ride in the cab of the truck. Because she is pregnant she is able to sit in the truck next to the driver. Sitting up in the cab of the truck is an honor for anyone in the family, to be out of the harsh weather is something to be prized.
