The people in the middle colonies lived in houses that were used for everything like work, play , and visiting places. Families usually contained at least seven children, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. Slaves rarely live with the families. The father was the head of the household and the mother was considered to be his helper. The colonists wore clothes that also showed there status in the colony. Most people wore clothes of cotton or linen. The people that were considered to be in the gentry class could afford imported materials for better clothes. The other clothes were made by the woman of the household. The clothes were dyed with different kinds of things such as roots, berries, and so on. One famous person born in the middle colonies was Benjamin Franklin who gave the middle colonies a fire department and a public library. .
The southern colonies were Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia. They were supported by slave labor and farming, for the most part. The government of the colonies were infested by planters and farmers in the late seventeenth century. The primary seaport for the southern colonies was Charleston, South Carolina, a place where the growth of commerce began. Settlers would learn of ways to combine agriculture with commerce to better support themselves. The southern forests would provide the best building materials in the world for ships. The Carolinas produced rice and indigo. The prosperity of these colonies brought more than 100,000 people to the New World.
The New England colonies which were Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts were rockier and colder than the other colonies. They also had a narrower coastal plain that the colonies. Women did not play a major role in business, or public life of New England. However, they did do a lot of work around the home. The men in New England, from high to low, held just about every possible position.
