Richard Nixon

World War II was going on around this time (1939-1945) and although Nixon earned two promotions and raises within 6 months of working for the law-firm he got bored with his job. Nixon then joined the navy in 1942 although it wasn't necessary because as a Quaker he could have gotten a deferment as a conscientious object. His government job also ensured that he did not have to serve in the military. Nixon was determined to serve and to help his country out in a time of need. He served for 4 years and left the military in 1946 as a lieutenant commander. .
In 1946 the start of his early political career had begun. He was persuaded by one of his senior Republican contacts to run for Congress as a Republican in 1946. Nixon was delighted, and his opponent in the election Jerry Voorhis, was a communist sympathizer. This wouldn't normally mean a lot but during this time there was a lot of fear of a World War III because of the Cold War in Russia. So Nixon did what he had to do to win, in his eyes anything that helped him win the election was valid. This was a belief that he would continue to hold throughout his political career. Nixon's first political victory was the most exciting of his career, and he savored every moment of it. There was no indications that he felt remorseful over the tactics he had used to win, he stated once "Of course I knew Jerry Voorhis wasn't a Communist. The important thing is to win." Later he denied making that statement.
Nixon went from congressman to United States senator in 1950, then to vice President in 1952 under Dwight D. Eisenhower. Richard Nixon was only 40 years old when he held the position of vice president, the second youngest ever. In 1960 Nixon first ran for president against John. F. Kennedy. The 1960 run for the White House marked a turning point in American politics. It would become the first national political race to be organized with television coverage as a focal priority.
