Attaining Justice

Wollstonecraft is articulating and implying that when women rely on their looks, they are losing the opportunity to gain and succeed from a talent or skill. She says, "true happiness must arise from well regulated affections; and an affection includes a duty" (Jacobus 783). She implies that beauty should parallel with talent and skill. Women are made weaker by the attention they receive for their beauty as opposed to their natural talents. Wollstonecraft is implying that the progression of women is being hindered by this sexist attitude. .
This belief is similar to Martin Luther King Jr.'s conviction that laws should be established to attain justice, not to further injustice. Justice is fairness, and King explains this. " . Law and order exist for the purpose of establishing justice and that when they fail in this purpose they become dangerously structured dams that block the flow of social progress" (Jacobus 189). King is saying that the improvement of the conditions that African Americans live with is dependant upon the regulation of just laws. He defines a just law as " a manmade code that squares with the moral law or the law of God" (Jacobus 187). A law that is mandated on the minority, but the majority is not required to follow, is considered unjust (Jacobus 187). The unjust laws, such as the segregation statutes, infringed on humans rights, and therefore slows the progress of society and African Americans. .
Wollstonecraft addresses political issues regarding women, such as the role that females should play in society. "Women might certainly study the art of healing, and be nurses" (Jacobus 790). Along with medical careers, she asserts that if women were more educated in the field of business, then they would not degrade themselves with prostitution or marry a man simply for support or stability (Jacobus 790-791). Wollstonecraft believes that women should be given the right to hold jobs of equal opportunity and stature as men.
