"The Cask of Amontillado"is a fictional tale about homicidal revenge. There are several characters mentioned in the story. The main focus lies upon Montresor, the homicidal narrator of this horrific tale, who pledges revenge on Fortunato for an insult. We do not receive much information about past experiences of Montresor during the story. We must only speculate as to what contributed to Montresor becoming homicidal. By telling the story from Montresor's point of view, Poe forces the reader to look into the inner workings of a murderer's mind. .
Several characters are mentioned in the story, but yet the true focus lies upon Montresor. Montresor pledges revenge on Fortunato for an insult. "The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could; But when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge At length I would be avenged; this was a point definitely settled I must not only punish, but punish with impunity." (Poe 173) At This juncture we begin to see Montresor begin to formulate his plan of retribution. The reader cannot help but notice that Montresor is not lacking any intelligence or wit whatsoever, he is on the contrary, extremely sly and cleverly deceitful. Very early on we see that Montresor is extremely careful not to arouse Fortunato's suspicions. Montresor appears to be the type of man who will exploit a person's weakness in order to bring his plans into proper perspective. Upon his initial meeting with Fortunato, it is very clear to him that Fortunato was very intoxicated. "Neither by word nor deed had I given Fortunato cause to doubt my good will. I continued to smile in his face and he did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation." (173) Montresor leaps at the chance to lure Fortunato into his trap. .
Whilst reading the selection, it becomes evident that a person must have a great deal of anger and angst to commit such an atrocity, in such a pre-meditated and cold-blooded manner.
