             Today Malaysia is now headed by a constitutional monarchy. A constitutional monarchy is simply; a political system in which the head of the state is a king or queen ruling to the extent allowed by a constitution. The Malaysian government in the 1960's decided they wanted to make their country prosperous and lower the poverty rate, so they placed subsidies for rice production to make peasant farmers self-sufficient. This plan did not work because the peasant farmers are still the poorest of the population in Malaysia today. In the 1970's and 80's any farmer that amounted to anything moved to urban areas to take advantage of employment in the rapidly growing manufacturing sector of the economy. In 1981 Mahathir bin Mohamad became the prime minister of Malaysia. Mohamad increased the government's role in the country's economy.
