The Pearl, an adaptation of a Mexican folk tale by John Steinbeck, took place in a village of Mexico. I especially like the character Juana, the wife of Kino. How she was brought up to love and care for her family, and to be strong in a tough situation.
Juana was a traditional quiet woman who always stayed with her husband, Kino. Her first Baby, Coyotito, was nearly everything in her world. She is patient, obedient, cheerful and strong. There is no doubt that she loved her family. She treated Kino as her husband even though she never wore a bride dress and stepped into the church. In chapter one, where Coyotito was bitten by a scorpion, everyone including Kino believed that the .
doctor wouldn't come to cure the baby. She went to the doctor's house with Kino and the baby, with a few misshapen grey pearls. The doctor didn't help them because they were poor. But we could see how Juana loved her baby and didn't give up easily. In chapter three, after someone went into their house and looked for the pearl, Juana asked Kino to.
throw the pearl away. "This thing is evil; this pearl is like a sin! It will destroy us!" .
(Pg 38) She noticed that they would be in danger because of the Pearl. She believed.
in God. She believed that the pearl would bring up misfortune. She would rather .
gave up treasure and not be rich, than let the pearl take their soul away. Juana was .
always patient and gave support to her husband. In this story she didn't talked much, .
but we could easily identify her character by reading her emotion and expression. .
"Juana watched him with worry, but she knew him and she knew she could help .
him best by being silent and by being near." (Pg 55) She noticed that the Evil has .
come and she was ready to fight. She tried to throw the pearl away to save her .
family, but she didn't succeed. When Kino hit her and took the pearl, she knew she .
couldn't stop him. Kino was losing his mind. Juana was brave like a man and .
