             Many people have pasts that they would like to forget. In "Fences," by August Wilson, the main character instead imposes his hardships he himself endured upon his family. Troy Maxson is a beaten down soul who only knows how to push people away and conceals himself in a veil of vulgarity. Thusly, Rose and Cory's hopes and aspirations were crushed under the weight of Troy's disastrous past. .
             Cory's determination towards playing football was shattered by Troy's own past in sports. Troy's refusal to sign the papers Cory needed to play is evidence of Troy's ill feelings on the subject. Because of his father's failure to achieve his goal, Cory must feel cheated out of reaching his. Troy's past inevitably destroyed Cory's possibly life in football. Furthermore, Troy tried to forewarn Cory that he would need to be extremely skillful to actually play in a game. This demonstrates Troy's parental concern as to not let his child experience any type of emotional pain of such monstrosity. Unfortunately, this message was lost because of Troy's forcefulness with his words. Nonetheless, Cory's appetite to play football was spoiled due to Troy's past hunger that was also spoiled by a seemingly greater power.
             Rose's dream of happiness in a happy home was obliterated by Troy's malediction of love and marriage. As evidence by Troy's infidelity that lead to the creation of Raynell. Troy's perpetuated womanizing ways drastically devastated the level of trust Rose has for Troy. Being the maternal woman she is, Rose's heart was ultimately crushed by Troy's unfaithfulness. In addition to this, Troy's admittance to living a double life compelled Rose to expel Troy from their broken down home. Troy's expulsion did not last very long. Troy returned with the infant Raynell in arms expecting the nurturing Rose to be sympathetic to a lying cheating man with an out of "Wet-Lock," child. Nevertheless, Troy managed to slither his way back in the front door to his family's lives and annihilate them.
