Joshua L. Chamberlain

I know in whom my whole heart can rest - so sweetly and so surely. Fanny, Dear Fanny, only tell me that YOU do love me as I DO love you."( Geocities.com 4) Together they had five children, but only two of them survived into adulthood. .
Chamberlain's father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, all had participated in wars, but Joshua didn't have any military experience. Luckily, he was born to be a natural leader. He was very courageous and he was able to take a lot of harsh pain. When the Civil War began in 1861, he felt the need to fight for the Union. Unfortunately, Bowdoin College didn't want to lose him as a professor, so he continued his job there. .
In July of 1862, Abraham Lincoln called for 300,000 more men to serve for three years in the federal armies. Chamberlain knew that it would take some effort in order for him to round up enough soldiers for an entire regiment, but he was determined to make it work. He wasn't worried about all the other things that went along with fighting in a war. He told the governor, "I have always been interested in military matters, and what I do not know in that line, I know how to learn."(Trulock, 8) On August 8, 1862, Chamberlain was given the title of Lieutenant Colonel of the Twentieth Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment. After that, he was determined that nothing was going to stand in his way. Even though his wife was against him going, (she liked being a professor's wife and she didn't want him to risk his life by fighting in a war) he did what he had to do. .
The Twentieth Maine reached Gettysburg at about 7 a.m., on July 2, 1863, the second day of battle. They were constantly being moved toward the left, but they tried to get some rest and eat as much as they could, because they were expecting to be called to fight at any time. At about 4 p.m. they heard a cannon go off in the distance. They quickly moved toward their left, which was the direction in which the cannon was fired.
