huckleberry finn

It is a coincidence that Aunt Sally is Tom Sawyer's aunt, which in itself is not believable, in addition to Aunt Sally's belief that Huck is Tom. This element of coincidence takes away from the scene's believability. Lastly, supernatural elements, such as ghosts, takes away from the realism of the episode. People don't usually mistake other people for ghosts; when Tom mistakes Huck for a ghost, one is drawn again to the element of this scene that the novel is, indeed, fictional, and therefore reinstates that this scene contributes to the episode's lack of believability.
These are reasons why the Phelps Episode was not believable. .
The three characters in the story maintain what the reader comes to expect of them. Tom Sawyer continues to try to preserve his reputation in society by being adventurous and daring, Huck is once again moral without consciously thinking he is so, and Jim continues to be the caring and responsible individual he has been throughout the novel. Tom Sawyer chooses to rescue Jim because he wants to prove to himself that he can do so in a dangerous and over-thought way. He points out how they should rescue Jim in such a way that he has read about, rather than being concerned for the lives of Huck, Jim, and himself. This brash thinking on Tom's part shows that Tom cares less about Jim than Huck, who is concerned for all of their lives, and wants to display his adventurous persona. Huck wants to free Jim, and involves himself in this escapade in order to do so. He cares for Jim, as he has for most of the duration of the novel, and is once again doing something that could appear morally wrong, but could also be seen as morally right. He is trying to take away a slave from the Phelps's, which could be seen at the time in society as a wrong thing to do, given that Jim was a Black slave, but chooses to do it in order to free a friend that he cares for. Huck reveals himself to be the same person he has been for the majority of the novel.
