I've had my share of licks! Damn I hated those! Were they justified Im talking about violent punishment whether it be a harmless spanking, a punch, or a slap. Which of these forms of punishment are justifiable, if any? Personally, there is no such thing as justified violence but in the eyes of others a belt whipping, a spanking, a slapping, and other forms of violent punishment are justified. So therefore, there is no one true distinction between justified and unjustified violence. .
M.F.K. Fisher has a unique point of view about the forms of punishment her father administered to her. At first we are fed two lines which cause confusion to the reader. In the beginning of the essay Fisher writes "I have never been beaten.", but then goes on to say how she was spanked eight or nine and even ten times in a row by her father. Then to further contradict what she had already said, she says "Once Rex hit me." From the beginning of the story until this point she goes from never being beaten, to spanked on a regular basis, to only being hit once. This raises a lot of questions, but also provides some answers. It informs us that she obviously has different views about different forms of violence. But what are they?.
The spankings administered to her seem violent in my eyes, but to Fisher this is the justified violence. She doesn't see it as violence but more as a just punishment for her wrongdoings. It seems almost as if she didn't even really acknowledge the spankings proving that she doesn't consider spankings to be violent. She says how she would wait for him upstairs in her room for him to come home and spank her if she had done something bad sometime throughout the day. From this statement we know that the spankings were prolonged and not on the spur of the moment. Maybe hinting to the reader that the spur of the moment violence may not be justified in her eyes. Furthermore, it helps bring to a conclusion the aspect of spanking in teh eyes of Fisher.
