Smith's main goal was to make survival among the settlers the main priority rather than finding gold. Smith did accomplish that goal with a ninety percent survival rate, but that was not what England was looking for. They were looking for riches and so they sent new colonist and replaced Smith as the President who had become an honorable man. He would now move his interests into the colonization of New England. .
             John Smith wrote A Description of New England in order to try and promote colonization of this new territory. He said, "Heer nature and liberty affords us that freely, which in England we want, or it costeth us dearely" (Smith 252). Smith was born to a poor family and had the dream of becoming a gentlemen and somebody of importance. He hoped by trying to colonize New England he would gain that name recognition that he had always wanted. However, he never accomplished his dream and in his work, Unexperienced Planters, he summarized why he failed. He says, " when all their aim was nothing but present profit, as most plainly appeared, by sending us so many Refiners, Goldsmiths, Jewellers, Lapidaries, with all their appurtenances but materials, and all those had great summes out of the common stocke; and so many spies and super-intendents over us, as if they supposed we would turne Rebels, all striving to suppresse and advance they knew not what- (255-256).
             The Anglican Church in England was in full force and smaller factions of religious beliefs were in constant ridicule. One such group was the Pilgrims, and in 1620 they left for the new world in hopes of finding religious freedom. William Bradford describes the events of the Pilgrims in his writings of Plymouth Plantation. The Pilgrims may not have landed their ship in the right place of Jamestown, but where they landed in Plymouth was seen as an act of God and that is where they were supposed to live. Bradford describes the hardships of the Pilgrims voyage across the sea and also describes the first few months of colonization, which was given the name of "starving time.
