the Crucible!!

Once the girls talk to each other, they become more and more frightened of being accused as witches. The reverend Hale asked Abigail "Did you call the Devil last Night?" Abigail response "I never called him! Tituba, Tituba- At first Tituba denies these allegations saying "No no sir I don't truck with no devil!" Hale then tries to cajole her by saying " Open yourself, Tituba - open yourself and let God's holy light shine on you", eventually Tituba concedes and says there were four of them, however before she gets to name them all Abigail realizes that this is a good opportunity to gain respect from the villagers and get rid of Elizabeth Proctor. So Abigail starts the accusations by saying, "I go back to Jesus; I kiss his hand. I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osborn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil!".
Abigail's cousin Betty Parris, continues the cry with, "I saw George Jacobs with the Devil! I saw Goody Howe with the Devil!" From here on, the accusations grow and grow until the jails overflow with accused witches. It must have given them an incredible sense of power when the whole town of Salem listened to their words and believed each and every accusation. He found this to be the ideal way to get what he wanted, power and respect from the people because they thought he was doing a good thing; ridding America of communism. It seemed that he had been given carte blanche to usurp authority at every level. He held two presidents captive - or as nearly captive as any presidents of the United States have ever been held. From 1950 to late 1954 Harry S Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower could not act without weighing up the effect of their plans upon McCarthy and the forces he led.
