This led the Spanish to use the Philippines as an anchor in the galleon trade between China and silver in the Americas. Later on during the decline of the Qing dynasty, Russia and English put increased pressure for trade. Russia seeking for skins and furs penetrated through the region between Siberian Russia and Manchuria. The Tsar of Russia negotiated with China and settled boundary disputes and regular trade between both countries. The English trading post in Canton in 1699 increased export of tea and silk to England rapidly. To limit contact between Chinese and Europeans, Qing only allowed licensed Canton to be the only trading post with the West, but by the end of the eighteenth century, British demanded the license to other cities to be opened to British manufactured goods. The arrival of the Jesuits was very effective on China. The Jesuits drew parallels between Christian and Confucian concepts to show the similarities between Christian morality and Confucian ethics. This led to the conversion of many Chinese, although this forced the Europeans to learn about Confucian ethics. The Jesuits weren't in China permanently because after Emperor Kangxi's death, his successor suppressed Christianity in China due to the fact that Christianity was becoming very popular and would give too much power to the Europeans. .
             China remained immune to European influences by creating more factories and workshops to manufacture the goods needed. The increase in factories increased the speed of production, which than led to cheaper prices of the products, such as cotton. The Chinese were ethnocentric and they believed that everything they needed was already in China. This led the Chinese to the belief that they didn't need the Europeans to introduce new goods. China found no desire of the introduction of European goods. They were impressed by some of the products, although none of them were essential for the Chinese to live out their everyday life.
