The party controls not only the lives of people through the use of telescreens, but reality itself. They do this by altering the past, a fact easily concealed by The Party's principles of doublethink. The best explanations of doublethink are examples provided by The Party's slogans. They are: WAR IS PEACE, SLAVERY IS FREEDOM, and IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.
Doublethink is a kind of manipulation of the mind. Generally one could say that Doublethink makes people accept contradictions and it makes them also believe the party is the only institution that distinguishes between right and wrong. This manipulation is mainly done by the "Minitrue" (Ministry of Truth), where Winston Smith works. When a person that is well grounded in Doublethink recognizes a contradiction or a lie of the Party, then the person thinks that he is remembering a false fact. The use of the word Doublethink involves doublethink. With the help of the "Minitrue" it is not only possible to change written facts, but also facts that are remembered by the people. Complete control of the country and its past equals complete control of the future. The Nazis, who told the people that German Knights believed in the principles of National Socialism, had already used the fact of faking the history. Russia and Italy also had the same kind of social control presented in Nineteen Eighty-Four. Stalin had icons, statues, and images of himself plastered all over public buildings, in schoolrooms, and in homes of Russia. Mussolini and Hitler also did the same thing. In Germany, every home had a book that Hitler wrote, Mein Kampf. .
The Ministries of Truth is also where "Two Minutes Hate", an event where Big Brother is trying to bring the hate out of everyone's hearts and channel it to the enemy, was held. Orwell linked the Two Minutes Hate sessions with Hitler's action to reinforce personal power and to sell his program to the people. Hitler created a Ministry of Propaganda under Joseph Goebbels, a former journalist and Nazi party district leader in Berlin.
