King Lear

of powerful destruction built up inside of him. Lear is a perfect example of despair in this play .
because not only must he deal with the physical loss of his kingdom, he must also live with the .
realization that he failed his people when he was king. This gives Lear an extreme feeling of woe .
and also leaves him feeling naked because he used to be a highly respected king with everything .
he wished for. He is now standing outside naked, with a fool and a beggar.
             .
Cordelia is the first character in the play to be faced with woe. She is disowned by her father and stripped of her rights to her part of his kingdom. This leaves Cordelia naked both mentally and physically. She has had her inheritance and dignity taken from her. Even after these atrocities, Cordelia is willing and able to accept her misguided fathers mistakes and take him into her care. She realizes that her father is blinded by his need for compliments and Cordelia still maintains her dignity when speaking. "The jewels of our father, with washed eyes Cordelia leaves you. I know you are what you are; And, like a sister, am most loath to call your faults as they are named. Love well our father. To your professed bosoms I commit him; But yet, alas, stood I within his grace, I would prefer him to a better place!" (23) Cordelia still had her free will and respect for herself, unlike her fake sisters, whom Lear gave his land too. Near the end of the play one gets the idea that Cordelia has been taken care of or watched over by God. This may have led to helping her father see the fault in his actions and come to realize who his truly loving daughter is and end up with Cordelia again. When Lear is found by Cordelia she holds him in her arms and he says to her "You are a spirit, I know. Where did you die?" (271)This shows the idea that Cordelia is somehow in touch or one with god or that she is an angel herself. Lear then goes on to admit his wrong doing and to beg Cordelia's forgiveness.
