A raisin in the sun

This trait was passed onto their daughter one example of how they were was when Lorraine was first born, and still in the hospital. There was a law in 1930 that required hospitals to list the racial identities of newborns, so when Hansberry's parents received her birth certificate they crossed out the word "Negro" and instead wrote "Black" (Encarta-2). In 1930 America was in the middle of "The Great Depression", but the Hansberry family overall would have been considered Upper Middle Class, and in the black community the were considered rich (James-6). Carl Hansberry had helped to establish one of the first black savings banks in Chicago, and he was also a successful real estate salesman. He also came up with the idea of a "kitchenette", which was an apartment were he was able to convert a large area into several smaller ones. In 1938 Carl also challenged a supreme court decision against integration of neighborhoods, and won. The family then moved into an exclusive Chicago neighborhood where they were the only black family.
Lorraine Hansberry herself said that she hated being labeled a rich girl when she was young. So she tried very hard to relate more to the children of less fortunate family's then to those of her own social class. Hansberry also said, that she admired the maturity, and independence of these lower class children. She even practiced certain rituals such as hanging keys around her neck so that she could be though of a one of them. Shortly afterward moving into the all white neighborhood she was nearly killed by a brick that was thrown through one of their windows this greatly affected her. So much that she probably decided to write a play with the theme of a family moving into an environment where they were not wanted when she wrote "A Raisin in the Sun". .
Lorraine Hansberry's education took her over a long path. After finishing high school, she enrolled at the University of Wisconsin intending to graduate from there in four years.
