Frank Lopez is a good example of such a character, a considerable cocaine dealer at the time creates a friendship with Montana and allows him to step into the industry. Montana's swift rise allows him to excel Lopez, adding further insult by taking his girlfriend (Michelle Pfeiffer), Lopez orders a hit on Montana. Failing to succeed, Montana is shown in a familiar scene standing over Lopez who is begging for his life, a definite contrast in the difference of status between the two. This situation also associates the unity between characters, and the director's description of how quick friends can become enemies. The director effectively interlaces these elements to allow the viewer to understand all aspects of the film.
Throughout scarface, cocaine is used as a motif to draw all the characters of the film together, weather it be Tony Montana the untouchable cocaine dealer or his wife Michelle Pfeiffer an addict who ridicules Montana although contradicts herself, being an addict. Violence, another motif in the film, also portrays Montana's character. We can identify his issues of paranoia and disregard for morals and ethics. Once scene which is a classic and always is talked about, is the scene involving Montana and his partners including Manol, his trusted second man. A drug deal gone wrong, Montana witnesses one of his partners brutally killed with a chainsaw. The director (Brian De Palma) does this intentionally to communicate to the audience Montana's cold and vindictive character. It is conclusive De Palma uses a third motif of sound, predominantly through the movie, before a dramatic scene occurs, high pitched sounds are presented which in a sense substantiates the impact of the scene which is to follow. An evident example of this is in the Little Havana Club, a local hotspot for the elite of Miami, where Montana spots his sister Gina. A panned shot is shown with the high pitched sound as Montana turns to the dance floor and sees Gina, evidently we are able to determine that Montana will conduct violent acts to the male individual with Gina.
