The Illusion of Utopia

This construction of an ideal socialist political system is ineffective because Swedes suffer high suicide rates and people do not feel the overall fulfillment pledged by the utopian philosophy that indoctrinated the political system. Yet, Sweden is the country where many enlightened positive changes have been realized. It is frequently acknowledged as the best political system in the world, especially among social democracies. The Enlightenment utopia once dreamed of by the French and similar thinkers seems to have never succeeded. It failed in both its Enlightenment theory and in all manifestations in practice, even Sweden. .
Jean Calvin, who built upon Augustine's Judeo-Christian thought, was against trying to build a utopia. He believed we must overcome the false hope in utopia and instead focus on realistic betterment in all areas of life. The twentieth century journalist Malcolm Muggeridge accepted Calvin's view while critiquing enlightened utopian views. He observed that all incarnations of Enlightenment utopia failed to live up to their promised perfection. Certainly, Calvin's Geneva strove to better living conditions, but did not attempt to perfect them. The philosophical train of thought that governed Calvin's Geneva saw that it is better not to improve the living conditions if people are only prisoners, but to provide freedom for them. That is progressive, realistic and ideal, as I shall show, using Muggeridge as support. .
