American poets

The Definition of America as seen in the Poetry of Langston Hughes and Claude McKay.
America is a place that many people associate with equality, opportunity and the promise of a good life. This idea has existed for centuries and continues to be prevalent even today. When many people think of this country they feel as though it is a refuge for others who are oppressed and hungry for a better way of life. However, America does not symbolize a safe haven for all people. For centuries Black people have felt as though they have not been receiving the promises that America was built on. The idea of equal treatment for all people does not pertain to blacks. In spite of the fact that there are laws that say blacks are no longer second class citizens, they are still treated differently than their white counterparts. This fact leads to the idea that America brings to mind different ideas and thoughts depending on a person's experience. Claude McKay and Langston Hughes have similar views of America which deviate from the "utopian" symbol that this country has attempted to portray. Both writers understood that America could not represent these values when it treated its black citizens so poorly. Langston Hughes's poem "I, Too" and Claude McKay's poem "America" depict a more realistic view of American society. The second class status of black people in America can be seen in each although each writer's form of expression is different.
McKay's poem "America" depicts a feeling of loss. The speaker seems to feel as though America's potential to be a great country has been wasted in an unjust treatment of its black citizens. In spite of this feeling, the speaker seems to find solace in the fact that he will not let America break him. .
Although she feeds me bread of bitterness,.
And sinks into my throat her tiger's tooth,.
Stealing my breath of life, I will confess.
I love this cultured hell that tests my youth! (1-4).
