Reasons for the failure of the league of nations .
After World war I , in 1918 , the best idea to keep peace seemed to be for all countries in the world to join together in an organisation . This organisation was to be called the " League of Nations " . The League of Nations was the first international organization in the modern era , The League continued to operate until 1946 when the " United Nations " assumed its assets and carried in much of its work . .
Setting up the League :.
War ends . This news meant various things for different people . It was up to the politicians to keep the peace . Representatives of the victors met in Versailles , near Paris .
The Treaty of Versailles may be either worse or better than what people think about it now , but one thing is certain - that just as the War which it brings to a close was the most difficult of all the wars that have ever been fought, so the Treaty of Versailles is the most difficult of Treaties that has ever been made . .
Britain : wanted to make a lasting peace . .
Wanted money from Germany for the damage they had caused .
France : Wanted revenge ( -> Germany ).
Wanted to make Germany pay .
Wanted Alsace - Lorraine .
Wanted security , so Germany could never attack France again .
Italy : Wanted land from Austria ( south Tyrol ) . .
USA : Wanted a fair peace -> 14 points .
Structure of the League :.
The League included principal organs ( the Assembly , the council and the secretariat ) and Technical organizations ( for example , the Economic and Financial Organisation and , to a lesser extent , the Health Organisation . ).
The council met 5 times per year and in emergencies . The decisions of the council had to be unanimous.
The Assembly met once a year . Their aim was to improve working conditions and collect statistics . It was composed of three representatives for every member state, each state having one vote.
