Computer Animation

             1980's.
             In this decade, there were many advancements to computer software which allowed for better performance. In the early 80's Tron4 was made. It was 30 full minutes of computer animation, but because the upgrade of programs wasn't as advanced as what we have today, it took a lot of time, and lots of money. .
             1985.
             The first CGI character , who was the Young Sherlock Holmes, was created. In the movie, the sequence included a stained glass window which came to live and interacts with a scared priest. The sequence only lasted 30 seconds, but it has shaped the computer animation industry.
             1986.
             Pixar created Luxo Jr. It was the first animated film to be nominated for an Academy Award. It also won 20 awards at international film festivals. It includes several technical achievements in computer animation, most notably self-shadowing, where an image accurately casts a shadow onto itself. Final images were rendered with multiple light sources and motion blur. The sequence included two lamps playing with a ball. .
             1988.
             Another new CG technology was pioneered in 1988 when LucasFilm used "morphing" to good effect in Willow5. The technique allowed for characters to seamlessly change from one image to another. Also, in the same year, John Lasseter6 worked on "Tin Toy". This tells a story of a wind-up toy's 1st encounter with a child. It won an academy award for the best animation short. It proved that computer animation was really advancing and benefitting the film industry.
             1989.
             In this year, James Cameron was the director/producer of an underwater sci-fi film called "The Abyss". Computer Graphics made a water like creature which would mimic the faces and actions of the actors. It was an amazing effect and CG had literally converted a directors dream into reality.
             Also in May of 1989, Renderman was launched by the people at Pixar. It was a software designed in the mid-1987, but this was a version unlike any other which contained RIB ( Renderman Interface Bytestream).
