Wealth has many different meanings around the world. Here in America the word wealth is used as a substitute for rich. In other places, it means responsibility and kindness. Eskimo wealth is something different. Love, fearlessness, and intelligence is how the Inuit culture believes defines wealth. In Julie of the Wolves, by Jean Craighead George, Julie exemplified Eskimo wealth. .
One of the three traits that Miyax had was fearlessness. She was fearless because when Amoraq looked like he was going to attack her, she still came closer to him to show him that she was nice and respected his leadership. Also, she was brave when Jello was fighting and growling for the meat. Miyax hit him and told him to go away instead of running away, fearing that he might hurt her. Last, she had fearlessness because when she went to get milk from Silver, she bit her on the shoulder which signaled to Miyax not to do it again. These examples show that Miyax was very brave.
Miyax was an intelligent girl who survived in the tundra all alone with wolves. When she had no shelter, she knew from the teachings of her dad how to build shelter, a sod house. Also, when Miyax needed food she knew that it would be easier to get the baby owls because the adult owls could easily scratch her or injure her. Last, she was smart because when she had to move from her sod house, to carry everything, she made the sled from the strips of frozen cloth; to make the part of a sled that looks like skis " she formed tear shaped hoops out of the last two strips. She laid them out to freeze". This means she has intelligence, one of the three Eskimo traits.
Another trait that Miyax had was love, the last of the three traits to have Eskimo wealth. She had love because she loved her father so much that she never gave up hope that she would find him. Also, she had love because when she was with Kapu, Miyax cured him when he got shot by the American hunters "Monotonously repeating over and over the healing song of the old bent lady- Last, she had love because when found the bird, Tornait, Miyax took care of him because she knew that the bird couldn't have survive in the artic mild winters, so she kept him in her hood and fed him.
