             They picked out a piece of White Ash wood and Hillerich shaped it for Browning. In the next day's game, Browning went three for three and gave the credit for his three longs hits to his new bat (Mussill 3). The rest of the Eclipse baseball team asked for bats to be made for themselves. That is how J. F. Hillerich & Bradsbury started making Louisville Slugger professional baseball bats (Mussill 4). .
             There have been other baseball manufacturers. Another large manufacturer of baseball bats is Spalding. Spalding and Brothers were in the sporting goods business at the turn of the century and they decided to get into the business of making baseball bats. Spalding had a mushroom put above their trademark so people would recognize their bats. Wright and Dilson made a handle with a double ring for a better grip and what they thought to be better control (Mussill 4). .
             Players, coaches and manufacturers have all worked hard to find the best bat. They have tried different sizes, different weights and different types of wood all for the purpose of improving the game of baseball. Which bat in the hands of which player will hit the ball the hardest or the farthest? Different types of wood have been used to make bats. Hillerich made Browning's bat out of White Ash. Hickory was a very popular wood for making bats. Today's wooden bats are made out of a mixture of Hickory or Ash (Characteristics 3). .
             In nineteen eighty five a rule was made that bats have to be round. For major leagues, bats must be made of wood and cannot be longer than fourty two inches or wider than two and three fourths inches. Restrictions for the wooden bat keeps the game of baseball regulated for the players.
