An Inquiry In How the Practice of Cryonics Effects Identity

In order to assess the effect that cryonics has on our understandings of identity, body and death it will be necessary to briefly discuss the procedure and context of such a practice. Cryonics is concerned with the preservation of the body of a person who has just died by rapidly cooling the body, usually in liquid nitrogen, to retain the cellular and molecular structure in the hope of resuscitation in the future. Alcor is the world's largest provider of cryonics services and was established in 1972. Alcor's most advanced procedure is called Vitrification. Vitrification is achieved by replacing sixty percent of the fluid in the cells with a cryoprotectant, this process is supposed to protect cells from ice crystal damage during the freezing process. Noticeably the factor that sets cryonics apart from many other medical procedures is that there is no evidence that a reversal of the process would be definitely feasible. INSERT EXAMPLES. Alcor state on their website that cryonics is still an unproven procedure with many uncertainties . Cryonics seems to provide a faith for the faithless, the practice is wrapped up in scientific terminology and procedures, but it still requires and enormous leap of faith when faced with the likelihood of success. Cryonics is perhaps a more understandable procedure for those whose lives have been cut short and this was primarily one of the selling points for cryonics providers, more recently however, there is a much greater influx of people signing up for cryonics without needing any such impetus. .
Our relationship to death has changed dramatically over the past century, death has become "the other" in postmodern times. Although the acceptance of the other is a major feature of postmodernism, we seem unable to accept death EXPAND This shift towards the disunion of death from life is likely for several reasons; firstly the prevention of death is elitist.
