Crimes without Reason

Capulet humiliates his servant, patronizing Tybalt's brazen wish to defy social rules and challenge a guest. Tybalt is also a child of the feuding families, and while the elders can now realize the attractions of peace, he knows only how to war. He takes his humiliation poorly, and is wounded to his core. He leaves foreseeing his own future saying "[Romeo's] intrusion shall/ Now seeming sweet convert to bitter gall". (I.iv.91-92) He is now set on a fatal course, hating Romeo for inspiring this outrage so quickly and completely that he eventually takes a coward's route in order to quench his thirst for revenge. This is a perfect example of reasonless passion overruling self- interest, as well as the quick pace at which grave decisions are made. Tybalt's blood feud represents the play's major shift towards tragedy.
Secondly, Romeo and Juliet see each other for the first time. Romeo had previously fallen into despair over unattainable love, yet forgets the previous object of his affection in a heartbeat and re- dedicates himself to another love without even a pause. Romeo is quick to love, and does not think of his own well- being or practicality if he thinks at all before throwing himself behind the whim of his heart. This love, so quickly born, is just as quickly crushed in the fifth scene, when both Romeo and Juliet discover that they have fallen for the child of their father's enemy, an insurmountable challenge to their happiness. Juliet is shocked, crying "Prodigious birth of love it is to me,/ That I must love my loathed enemy." (I.iv.140-141) Again unreasonable passion has led to dire results, the love of Romeo and Juliet so consuming in so short a time that its uselessness inspires further fatal leaps of the heart from both. .
In the second scene of the second act, Juliet gives herself totally to Romeo, promising her heart and her hand in marriage in spite of their families" long- standing rivalry.
