Brave New World

As times change, so must the world around us and everything that it is made up of. Technology, however, appears to be growing without bounds and is producing new ideas and theories with every passing day. This particular growth has various different effects on those in our society and a huge impact on our world view and distribution of power amongst the many nations. Aldous Huxley appears to have developed a significant alternative to this problem. In his novel Brave New World, Huxley portrays a society in which all beings are genetically engineered into different social classes. This eliminates the prejudices and jealousies of everyday life and allows everyone to have a specific place in society. However, the idea of gene modification as a means of improving the human race brings forth many arguments that cannot be overlooked. Many would argue in favor of religion whereas others would argue for the sake of the country and its reputation with the rest of the world or perhaps from an ethical standpoint. These arguments may be extremely convincing in either direction, therefore making the question of gene modification that much more difficult to answer.
Huxley describes a society where all aspects of human life are altered before birth. The human race is divided up into various different social classes and each individual is taught from birth to recognize their roles in life and accept their lifestyles. Such things that are altered in Huxley's novel and perhaps thought about when deciding whether genetic engineering is acceptable are intelligence, physical ability, and various other traits. Those arguing in favor of religion would most definitely say that these traits are the basis of individuality. God chose to make each person different for a particular reason and taking away from that would be hindering the whole idea behind religion itself. The idea of "playing god" often comes up in such situations and one must decide whether or not gene modification is in the best interest of everyone.
