the devils decade (1930's)

Normally as close to London as possible. Whereas the old industries had to be placed near the coal industry, these new industries no longer needed coal to run their machinery. This was now achieved by the use of oil and electricity. Therefore coal was not so much in demand. This led to high unemployment in coal producing areas. .
The foreign demand for goods fell drastically. Other countries became capable of producing their own food, cotton, and now coal. "These were the very things that other people could produce more cheaply"(Taylor, 1965, 182). The demand for ship building was cut as other countries built their own. Therefore the Jarrow shipyard closed down causing the unemployment of thousands. As a result, these newly unemployed Jarrow workers decided to protest by organising a march to London. This was one of many "hunger marches", and probably the most memorable. So far the phrase "devils decade" is one that people of the era wouldn't question as a description of the 1930's.
New industries developed mostly electrical and domestic goods. There was a good home market for this. Many people moved to the prosperous south and could afford these items. This was not the case for many, especially in areas like South Wales, the Midlands and Northern England. Because of family ties and mortgage commitments many people found it impossible to move. Many did though, mostly the young and the single. This left behind an older generation who had no prospect of work. So these already depressed areas became even more so. But it was something that had to be done in order for the new industries to thrive. "England could prosper only when men moved from the old industries, with low wages, to the new industries with high ones; but these new industries could flourish only when men had already moved." (Taylor,1965,183). Again, this illustrates how devilish the decade is but it isn't a true picture as many areas were prospering.
