The Awakening: The Destruction of an Immature Mind

Although he is known for his attachment to the older and married, she gives no thought to how close in age they are and how this makes their relationship much more questionable. Robert has lived without boundaries, as an adult and wealthy child, and Edna attaches herself to this persona. There is something pubescent about the pursuit of their relationship and how they treat one another, with his leaning on her arm and her playing hard to get. She even goes as far as to describe herself as "giddy- when she is beginning to realize her emotions for him. Chopin writes a very flirty, tense situation for them to be in. She even goes so far as to have Edna feel very annoyed at Robert and his small child games, but her annoyance is the youngest child's way of expressing a deeper emotion. Just like a child on the playground, Edna feels as though she dislikes Robert and all his attention when really her maturity does not let her be emotionally intelligent enough to admit where her feelings truly are. There is even her weak protest when Adele begins to think that maybe there is something more to her thoughts of Robert. She whines and denies like a woman much younger than she is.
"Of whom "of what are you thinking?- asked Adele of her companion, whose countenance she had been watching with a little amused attention, arrested by the absorbed expression which seemed to have seized and fixed every feature into a statuesque repose.
"Nothing,"" returned Mrs. Pontellier, with a start, adding at once: "How stupid! But it seems to me it is the reply we make instinctively to such a question. Let me see,"" she went on, throwing back he head and narrowing her fine eyes till they shone like two vivid points of light. "Let me see. I was really not conscious of thinking of anything; but perhaps I can retrace my thoughts."".
"Oh! never mind!- laughed Madame Ratignolle. "I am not quite so exacting. I will not let you off this time.
