Big Nurse


The men avoided her hard stare, unable to raise their eyes to meet hers. The doctor on the ward was afraid to even voice his own opinion to the nurse. When she told him to be quiet, he listened. In a staff meeting, all of the doctors looked to the Big Nurse for approval when they were voicing their opinions. They were afraid of what she would do to them if their ideas did not please her. They feared that if they didn't "play it just right they're liable to finish their training up in Portland at the alky hospital" (133). They felt as though their futures were in her hands. Chief Bromden also feared the nurse. He imagined himself to be in a fog in order to hide from her.
             God becomes angry when His children flagrantly disobey Him. Repeated sins, without repentance, will bring on his harsh punishment. God gives His children many chances to repent before He inflicts punishment. The Big Nurse waited patiently for the men to apologize for shirking their duties in favor of watching the World Series. When they did not, she felt she must revoke the privilege of using the tub room in order for the men to learn that they must not refuse to comply with the rules. She felt that defying policy without discipline would be detrimental to their health, just as sin is bad for the spiritual health of a person. Nurse Ratched also gave McMurphy every chance to admit he was wrong to beat the black boy who was taunting George. However, McMurphy refused to confess his wrongdoing, and the punishment, shock therapy, commenced. .
             God alone has the ability to create a new life and to cause a human being to change who he or she is, and this power brings God great joy. In the beginning, when God created man, he looked upon His creation and said it was very good. The nurse took it upon herself to try to create a new human being. She ordered a lobotomy for Maxwell Taber, and then she sent him back out into society.
