As I Lay Dying

             .
Addie never truly had the desire to have a family, what she desired most was to be alone. In her first few lines of her passage she declared "I wouldn't go home, instead I would go down the hill to the spring where I could be quiet and hate them-. The "them- she was describing was children in general (This of course was before she married, and even when she did marry her opinions of children never changed nor her desire to be alone). Addie repeatedly explains how children violated her quiet time. I'm not sure whether her attack is solely meant towards her children because the same attack could be applied on Anse. Even when Addie was younger she would retreat to a place where she could be alone. Addie wanted a solitary life, she needed no one to appreciate, compliment, or even love her. This woman was very unapproachable. Even when Anse had come to her door nicely dressed and asking for her hand in marriage she seemed vaguely interested in the whole marriage idea, yet, she speaks more about the property. Most women the marriage is very special to them and they would go into great detail about the wedding day. Not Addie her words were "So I took Anse-. If this woman thought of marriage this way one can only imagine how she would react to having children. "I gave Anse children. I did not ask for them-. This line is both self-explanatory and supportive to my idea of Addie not wanting children. Personally, this woman should not have children. Her words about her children are said in such a disgusting manner. In reference to her passage about her giving birth she said, "It was her duty to Anse-. Motherhood isn't a duty, motherhood is meant to be a loving responsibility, yet, Addie seems to separate herself from her children she states, "As I gave Anse three children who are none of mine-. She wants nothing to do with any of the children except Jewel. .
By her words, you can only give to interpretation her religious beliefs.
