Corporate Power


Coercion, simply put, is the act of threatening another party, either verbally or physically, in order to get the party to carry out the wishes or desires of the first. Mostly, one who is coerced does not act voluntarily. The third form of power is authority. Authority, in general, is a form of power in which the commands of a central power are obeyed because the central power is respected by those under his or her command. Usually, there is no fear of the repercussions involved with disobedience. Between the central power and those who obey him or her, there is an understanding that the central power has the right to issue commands, and there is an obligation by those who obey to carry out the wishes of the central power. Unfortunately, the definitions of influence, coercion and authority are as complex as the definition for power. Nevertheless, the representations of power, influence, coercion, and authority in their simplest forms will suffice in providing a foundation by which the goal of proving that the corporations do have the most power may be reached. .
             Governments, weather they are federal, provincial, or municipal, do possess a substantial amount of power. They have the power to fix our roads. The government also controls health care and schooling. The military is under the direction of the government. Foreign relations and foreign policy are also the responsibility of the government. Policy on immigration and immigration laws are again under the control of the government. If .
             the government has the power to do so many things, why can't they control the actions of the corporations?.
             Corporations have created problems in the Canadian economy. The government has the power to make and enforce laws. Sadly, the government has failed to enforce the law that stipulates that everyone, including the corporations, must pay taxes. Corporations must pay taxes on all the money they make every year, as does any other business.
