The History Of Lenses And Their Impact On Mankind.
The lens is a piece of curved glass or a different transparent substance that can be used for multiple purposes. It can be used for magnifying to focusing. Throughout the years, the uses of lenses has greatly expanded and improved in many ways. Now, we can see planets far away or magnify a small particle.
History: .
The actual lens, a piece of curved glass, never really had a true inventor, it was probably formed naturally. However, the earliest record of lenses was a round glass sphere filled with water that was created by The Greeks and The Romans. They used it as burning glasses. Scientists believe that there were earlier lenses, but their uses remain unknown. In 1268, an English philosopher named Roger Bacon stated the very first idea of using lenses in optical correction. However, it has been said that the uses of lenses were in use in China, during the 10th century, well before it was introduced in Europe. It was simple a lens with a circular frame securing it. Real glass lenses only commenced manufacturing during the beginning of the 14th century in Germany, Italy and England.
Some say the great invention of lenses, occurred around the end of the 13th century. In Florence, Italy, an uncertain man introduced the lens. From there, it spread all over Europe with no surprise since the optical error was very common. Some people say the inventor was a man named Amati who died in 1317. It's been said that he made the invention and only shared it with his friends and relatives. The process of making lenses hasn't changed a great deal. However, There have been many improvements, one special by Isaac Newton who introduced a technique of polishing the lens. The first ever lens used for focus correction, also known as a bifocal lens, was produced by the American scientist, Benjamin Franklin. There were many technological advances in the manufacturing of lenses and we have also greatly expanded their use.
