Lord of The Flies

Likewise Jack and Ralph initially respect each other, yet they both have a lust for leadership and power. This island was not big enough for the both of them. Ralph lengthens their friendship by allowing Jack to create a hunting party and lead it. This excites Jack and allows him to forget about his need to be chief. Yet when leading the hunting party is no longer enough power for him, he tries to take position as chief. He does this by insulting Ralph during a meeting he calls after they?re run in with the beastie, and tries to give him a bad image in front of the other tribe members. This is to try to turn them on Ralph and favor him as the new leader.
?I?ve got the conch. Ralph thinks you?re cowards, running.
away from the boar and the beast. And that's not all.?.
There was a kind of sigh on the platform as if everyone knew what was coming. Jack's voice went on, tremulous .
yet determined, pushing against the unco-operative silence.
?He's like Piggy. He says things like Piggy. He isn't a proper.
             chief.?.
             ?He's a coward himself.?.
For a moment he paused and them went on.
?On top, when Roger and me went on- he stayed back.?.
             (Golding 139).
Jack tells all the others on the island that Ralph is a coward because he runs from the beastie. He tries to convince the others that Ralph is no longer suitable to be leader and that he should be. Jack tells everyone that he will be starting his own tribe.
It seems like Jack did not want to split from Ralph's tribe at this time. This is because when he compared Ralph to Piggy his voice wastremulous?, as if he was afraid that no one would join him and he would basically be exiled. He chooses Piggy to compare Ralph to because none of the other children respect him. This was a good choice because he wanted to make Ralph look weak and insufficient.
Ralph and Raistlin are both put into harsh situations and both have to make very important decisions that could decide upon life and death.
