sufism

Western beliefs are that women are mistreated due to religious laws. While many women are mistreated it is due in part to economic status, social status, and in some cases sheer stupidity. The double standard that exists exists in these societies, not in Islam. In Islam man and woman will be judged the same before God on their Day of Judgment. The gender difference in religious practice is that of communal practice. The Friday Prayer at the mosque is almost always all male. Women pray in private unless circumstances allow otherwise. Women are allowed to be shaykhas and only lead women in prayer. Woman can follow a shaykh, but a man cannot follow a shaykha. .
Sufis follow the teachings of the prophet Muhammad. He also follows the teachings and guidance of his shaykh. The shaykh is regarded as the living exemplar of the prophet. In Sufism the local custom or law laid down by the shaykh is said to supercede all teachings in most circumstances. It is the duty of every Sufi to love and follow his shaykh.
A shaykh becomes a shaykh by apocalyptic succession in Sufism. The shaykh must have a silsilla, a chain of shaykhs going back toMessenger?. The silsilla is documentation of the true authority of the shaykh. The greatest achievement for a Sufi is becoming a wali. Wali translates to mean saint, someone who can produce miracles given to him by God. Wali is a spiritual rank not necessarily associated with being a shaykh. A shaykh may be a wali, but a wali doesn't have to be a shaykh. A wali's nafs are said to have died off after his many years of resisting them. This spiritual achievement is the end of the Sufi path to mystical union with God while on earth. The gift of granting miracles is called baraka. Baraka translates to mean blessing. .
Sufis are Muslims and observe Islamic practices. They practice the five daily prayers as well as fasting during Ramadan. In some cases Sufis are more stringent than Sunni Muslims in their practices.
