As he was beginning his writing career, he fell in love with Maria Beadnell, the daughter of a banker (Martin 19). His love was not returned and though he was devastated, they went their separate ways (Martin 22). His first publication was in late 1933 in the Monthly Magazine (Martin 22). His achievement landed him a regular job in the newspaper, The Morning Chronicle. Dickens wrote his articles under a pseudonym,Boz?.
In time, Dickens overcame his devastation that his first love rejection had caused, and he allowed himself to love again. However, his second love, Catherine Hogarth, had certain restrictions that he had to follow. He hadto be master of this relationship? (Martin 29). When Catherine's impatience for the wedding was addressed openly,he wrote her some stern letters reprimanding her? (Martin 29). Catherine and Dickens were married in 1836, when Dickens was twenty-four years old. In 1837, a desolate period ensued for Dickens when Mary Hogarth, Dickens sister-in-law and dear friend, died in his arms. He faced plenty of criticism during that time of mourning until he published Oliver Twist. Dickens, by 1838, had come a long way from being abourgeoisie? to being accepted into London'shigh society? Charles Dickens fell in love again with an actress named Ellen Ternan. He called herthe one happiness I have missed?? (Martin 79). This love brought problems to his marriage. Dickens and Catherine were eventually legally separated. In that time Dickens lived in Paris for 6 months (Martin 104). In 1859 Dickens published A Tale of Two Cities. He referred to it asthe best story I have ever written? (Martin 81). Dickens, before his death at Gads Hill Place at the age of fifty- eight, completes two novels.
Throughout Dickens writings, he repeatedly expresses his sympathy towards the struggling poor and children of an incompassionate society ruled by a corrupt government.
