Even contact between groups is looked down upon. In complete opposition with the caste system, there is the classless arrangement. As its name declares, a classless society is a society with no social stratification. An example of a classless society was the Soviet Union. In theory, the classless society sounds like a clever answer to the problems of inequality in the world. However, it, too, has many flaws. The third type of social stratification is, of course, Class, an achieved status society. This is a type of system in which an individual may have the ability to mobilize from class to class. People may move up in class, but can also fall to a lower class. This is the way of life here in America. .
With all of the inequalities among America's population, it is strange to acknowledge that many in this society deny a system of classes altogether. .
One of the most striking features of class in America is the widespread popular disbelief in its existence. Woodrow Wilson in 1912 observed that Americans like to think that "this is the country where there is no distinction of social status." To judge from Americans" responses to modern sociologists" questionnaires, American attitudes toward class have not changed much during the past two generations. (Luedtke 362).
This denial strings from the American dream. First of all, Americans want to believe that America is unique in that it is more egalitarian and fair. Yet there is ample evidence to declare that that is a falsehood. This country is full of inequalities, most branching off from the classes distinguished through economic status, power, and prestige.
Within America's class system, there are a multitude of other types of classes. The three main classes, based mostly on economic status, are the upper, middle, and lower. These are probably the first words that come to someone's mind when they are asked about the social hierarchy in America. However, when taking a deeper look at the class structure, one will see it more stably cut into six categories.
