education

Which is more important; academic learning or real life learning? In today's world, more emphasis is put on academic learning because it is good grades, not good morals that help children get into college and find good jobs. However, both must be implemented in order for a child to succeed in the real world.
The biggest goal in academic learning is the "development of the ability to think critically (Weiten 32)." This includes "purposeful reasoned, goal-directed thinking that involves solving problems, formulating inferences, working with probabilities, and making carefully thought out decisions (Weiten 32)." This is done through teaching children the "basics": reading, writing, communication, mathematics, science, history, geography, civics, economics, arts, and health & fitness (Bergeson). Hopefully, "Learners must be able to understand the link between their personal efforts and performance in school and their decisions about future career and educational opportunities (Bergeson)." However academic learning is limited to what it can teach a child. While it teaches a child how to succeed in school and their career, it does not teach that child how to succeed in the real world. .
In order to succeed in the real world, one must have a good character. This is achieved by mastering five essentials: morals, values, ethics, problem-solving, and decision-making. One learns these primarily through their family and friends and not in a classroom where the child is sheltered from the real world. This "real life" education includes observing how parents (as well as other adults) function in all the systems necessary to survive -- food, clothing, shelter, transportation, communication, health, employment, finance, government, religion, family, friends, community, interpersonal relationships, and more. .
While academic learning is vital, it cannot be the sole form of education. One must remember that intelligence is not enough.
