Can you imagine swimming in the ocean and walking out with any one of those items in your hand?.
             The effect of water pollution depends on the type and amount of contamination, the time of exposure, and what the water was like before the pollution. An estuary is a deep and wide channel to the sea. Estuaries are flushed easily by the sea's tide and can cope with more pollution. Some signs of water pollution is some algae may die causing the marine life to starve and move to other streams or lakes there have been many lakes that are now classified as dead lakes.
             Waste is measured in terms of total flow in gallons per day. The normal per capita flow of domestic, for a small town would be about 50 gallons per day, and for a large city about 200 gallons per day.
             In the United States, control over water pollution has come around in the 20th century. States only in latter years started taking active part in making laws and procedures for water pollution control. The first federal law concerning pollution was the 1899 Rivers and Harbor act, The 1965 Water Quality Act, the 1966 Clean Water Restoration Act, and the 1987 Clean Water Act. The federal government has slowly established criteria for all interstate and coastal waters, and provided for enforcement of laws against pollution.
             The 1987 clean water Act allowed twenty billion dollars to help provide states with federal funds for pollution control. The major provisions of this act were nine point six billion dollars in federal grants went to pay fifty five percent of costs to help communities build sewage treatment facilities. Another was eight point four billion dollars in federal grants went for state revolving-loan funds to finance municipal sewage treatment facilities, and two billion dollars for additional programs helping to clean up the nation's water supply. Also for the establishment of stricter laws against the use of toxic chemicals and the development of programs to monitor and control water pollution.
