This magnificent film; was directed by Ridley Scott. He had wonderful costume design and scenery. The storyline of this film was incredible as well as suspenseful. Russell Crowe, who plays Maximus the Gladiator performed remarkably. His emotion and ability to act out the action scenes were simply marvelous. Maximus, a prestigious general of Rome has lead his men to victory numerous times for the great emperor Marcus Aurelius. After a gruesome battle Marcus Aurelius calls Maximus to his tent to ask him to become the new emperor instead of his own son, Commadus. Maximus, anxious to get home to his family takes some time to think about such a prominent job. Meanwhile, Commadus finds out that he will not be the new emperor of Rome and murders his father. Since Marcus Aurelius has not announced his successor, Commadus becomes the new ruler of Rome by default. As his first duty, he orders Maximus to death. While Maximus is supposedly being killed, his family has already been ordered to die. Maximus escapes without the knowing of Commadus and later becomes enslaved. As a slave Maximus is ordered to be a prizefighter, later to be known as the Gladiator. Maximus fights not only to entertain but to also avenge the death of Marcus Aurelius and his family.
The costume design and setting was phenomenal. I loved the detail on all the clothing and buildings. It really made the film feel like it was taking place at the time of Julius Caesar. The score of the film was also outstanding. Each fight scene was perfectly choreographed with non-stop action and suspenseful music. As the movie progressed the movie became more suspenseful, which made the two and a half-hour length feel as if time had quickly past by.
Although everything about the movie was remarkable, the movie's storyline took a lot from Braveheart with Mel Gibson. There were scenes throughout the movie that have already been done in previous movies.
