Indian Theatre on Modern Stages

These objectives were accomplished through the elements of pantomime, graphic illustrations of stories, and the art of story-telling. The structure of Indian drama has also remained fairly unchanged in the Sanskrit drama genre. In this type of theatre, one leader serves as the primary actor and is in charge of a group of others who sing, dance, play music, write plays and act as assistants. This group, it is useful to note as well, can be comprised of men and women, though they group as a whole has been considered outcasts and on the same level as servants. .

In the vein of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet or of Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge film, it tells of a heroic Brahman merchant by the name of Carudatta, and his one love, Vasantasena, who is "a ravishingly beautiful and intelligent courtesan" (Oxford 449). Their love is intense, though they must struggle to hide it from a jealous and powerful suitor. As the play is romantic in nature, it is peppered throughout with interesting characters from all walks of life, giving the play a humorous bent. .
In order to perform The Little Clay Cart in Kyiv, Ukraine, several considerations of the play and of Indian theatrical traditions must be examined and implemented. First, the job of the director will be a difficult one, as performances are so all-encompassing and performer-driven. With that in mind, it might be suggestible that the director of the production also become the lead actor. Though this goes against Western theatrical practice in most cases, it is important that a director develop a hands-on approach to the production so as to guide all aspects of the performance.
Further, Indian drama was performed predominantly to celebrate religious festivals and special court occasions, ranging from coronations to marriages, births to triumphant returns of travelers.
