The plot took place in New York where Esther and twelve other women who won a prize to live in New York for fashion. She soon realize that fashion isn't her thing. Esther is from a small town in Boston where she lives with her mother, (her father died when she was young) Her Family is very poor, but fortuantly she has a friend name Doreen whose into fashion also. Doreen and Esther went to a bar and sooner or later, Esther ends up getting drunk and walking home alone. Later that night, Doreen told Esther that she didn't want to be apart of her life anymore, so their friendship ended that night.
Esther's supervisor tries to encourage her to try harder, but Esther finds it impossible to do very much. Esther wanted to graduate school, become a professor who also writes poetry, but she no longer care. She knows she wanted to become a write but she find it difficult to do. On top of that, Esther is also in conflict over her relation to men. She has been dating one man from her hometown, Buddy Willard, but no longer even likes him. She feels the need to be with men, but gets little pleasure from them and feels as if no one really sees her for who she is. .
The rising action happened when her blind date tried to rape her, but she manage to escape. Her time of depression had begun, she returned to the Amazon hotel and threw away her outfit on of the roof. .
Back home with her mother, Esther lacked summer jobs and schools. She applied for a writing seminar but she was rejected. She wanted to write novels but she didn't have enough perseverance to do so. Her mother urges her to learn shorthand, but Esther hates the idea of serving a man in any capacity. The climax starts as Esther becomes more and more depressed as the days go by. She stops sleeping and finds that she can neither read nor write. Her family doctor sends her to a psychiatrist who gives her outpatient shock therapy. The session traumatizes Esther and pushes her further into a search for a solution.
