Cable Vs DSL

So the telephone line can not be used for regular telephone calls at the same time a dial up modem is sending data, because they would here the sounds of the modems transferring data back and forth to each other. One way to solve this dilemma would be to attain another telephone line that can be used for internet use only. However, installing another phone line can become costly which makes this an unpopular fix.
With broadband access, a subscriber's computer is directly connected to the Internet at all times. There are two main types of broadband, Cable and Digital Subscribers Line more commonly known as DSL. These two types of internet connections offer an always on connection, which means you don't have to dial a special number to connect to the internet. Broadband is also connected to the internet at a much faster speed then dial up. Broadband connection can be up to 50 times faster. Both cable and DSL use existing wiring to lower the installation cost. DSL uses your existing phone line, while Cable uses the same line as your Cable TV. With broadband connections you can use your phone, TV, and surf the Internet at the same time which is unlike dial up that can use only one frequency; the phone line.
Digital Subscribers Line (DSL) uses regular copper telephone lines to connect homes and businesses to the Internet at high speeds ranging from 300Kbps to 1.544Mbps down stream and around 128kbs upstream. That is nearly 30 times faster then 56Kbps modems. DSL users have to install a special modem that separates high speed data from telephone signals. A limitation in the DSL systems is that the degradation of the signal makes the subscribers that are more distant from the central office that is delivering the signal unable to get DSL. A great advantage, however, is the dedicated connection the subscriber uses. Unlike cable, no other users share the connection, and there is therefore no competition with neighboring users for web signals.
