The infection was treated but Alice was left with a "hideous white scar", something that would scar her inside as well out. (www.members.tripod.com). .
Because of the scar that appeared on her face she no longer felt pretty. She felt ugly. She felt that when people looked at her they weren't looking at her, but her scar. So when people tried to make eye contact she quickly turned away looked toward the ground. Children at school saw the scar as an easy target to tease Alice about. The older brother that caused that scar on her eye became an instant defender for Alice. Her parents were concerned for her because she was no longer the out-going child she was. They sent her to live with her grandparents but Alice felt it more as a punishment. .
             .
When Alice returned home she did nothing but read. She used to read on and on for hours. Her mother understood the pain her daughter was going through so allowed Alice to escape through reading. During that time of solitude Alice discovered many authors. She also developed a keen sense of judgment of those around her. Because of her "disability" that enabled her to be the girl she once was all she did was observe people and things for what they were. Physical appearance then lessened its value to Alice. She saw her body only as a cover to her soul. .
When Alice was fourteen she visited her brother in Boston. While she was there her brother took her to a doctor to have her scar removed. After her surgery she no longer had to see herself as the ugly person she thought she was. She was transformed. She went back to her out-going ways, her grades raised, and she was even voted prom queen. (www.members.tripod.com). .
The trials and tribulations that Alice Walker went through as a young child somewhat into her teenage years helped her develop the writing style that is still acknowledged to this day. The novel The Color Purple has faced a lot of criticism from many different people.
