Textbook definition, the act of nourishing or the process by which an individual takes in and utilizes food material. More importantly it's what keeps us alive and healthy. Good nutrition is key to a healthy body. Without the right nutrients your body can't grow and keep itself energized and strong. There are guidelines you should follow when trying to keep a nutritious diet and six main nutrient groups that should be included daily. .
The first group is carbohydrates which includes things like breads, pastas, sugars, and starches. About 58% of your diet should be complex carbs and about 10% should be sugars. The next group is protiens. Protiens can be found in all meats, fish, milk products, and some combinations of beans and rice. You should have about 45-60 grams of protien per day to maintain a healthy diet. Now I"m sure most people in the world consider fats to be a bad thing but they are actually an essential part of your daily diet. There are two types of fat or lipids, as the nutrient group is called, there is saturated fats and unsaturated fats. Saturated fats are usually solids and come from animals. Unsaturated fats are usually liquids and come from vegetables. Saturated fats include things like butter and lard. Unsaturated fats are things like canola and olive oil. In your daily diet you should consume 65 grams of fat and only about 20 grams of saturated fat.
The last three groups are water, vitamins, and minerals. I think everyone knows you should have about 8 glasses of water a day. In the vitamin department there's another two groups, fat soluable and water soluable. You don't have to have as much fat soluable vitamins because they get stored in your fat cells for use later but you have to make sure you eat enough of the water soluable ones cause they just go through your system if you don't use them.
