The main purpose of the World Wide Web is a way of accessing information over the Internet. It is an information-sharing model that is built on top of the Internet. The Web uses the HTTP protocol, one of the languages spoken over the Internet, to transmit data. The Web also uses browsers, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape, to access Web documents called Web pages that are linked to each other via hyperlinks. Web documents also contain graphics, sounds, text and video.
The main commercial use of the web is done by corporations which sell and advertise their products and services over the internet. (e.g. a company could place an advert on a website which, when clicked, will take the user to an online catalogue of the company's products and services.).
Personal Leisure users mainly use of the web is for entertainment, as entertaining sites which get a lot of traffic can make large amounts of money from letting companies advertise on their site. (e.g. A home user could play free online games on a site hosted by a company that wishes to advertise it's product on that site.).
For professional users the web is an invaluable source of information on almost any conceivable topic of interest. (e.g. a travel agent could access records of the weather at a certain destination order to determine which holidays they would recommend to their customers.).
The main software you will need to access the web is a browser. A browser is your interface to the World Wide Web; it interprets hypertext links and lets you view sites and navigate from one Internet node to another. Among the companies that produce browsers are NCSA Mosaic, Netscape, and Microsoft, as well as commercial services like CompuServe, Prodigy, and America Online.
